Trip Combines Business with Pizza

Fourth and fifth grade students in Kaelyn Montgomery’s gifted program celebrated the end of a math unit about fractions with a visit to Romito’s Pizza on Brecksville Road in Independence. The students were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the pizza production process. They were able to ask questions about running the operation.

"I learned that it's not easy to run your business because you are the boss of everyone and you have to make sure that everyone is doing their job and that everything runs smoothly,” commented Alaina, a 4th grader.  “I learned they use a special type of oven to bake the pizzas.” added her classmate Remy, a 5th grader.

After the tour, the students had the opportunity to make their own pizzas and enjoyed challenging one another to incorporate fractions in the building of their pies. Alaina especially enjoyed the challenge of putting only ¼ of the sauce on the pizza. Remy, on the other hand, tried a different approach. “I most enjoyed trying to split my pizza into thirds.” The trip culminated with everyone enjoying their concoctions.
